HYPNOSIS It is likely as the client you will want to know more about Hypnosis and how it works as part of our first meeting. How we explain this starts with explaining the nature of Hypnosis, highlighting components of the mind the conscious, sub-conscious how they function together and lastly but especially the Conscious Critical faculty (CCF) which is pivotal to the process.
The Conscious mind. This conscious mind is in the here and now and takes in what is happening currently using all our senses. Auditory (Ears), Visual (Eyes), Kinaesthetic (Feeling), also Smell and Taste. The mind is focused alert and everything you are aware of now is in the conscious. The conscious mind is engaged in learning new things analysing and making sense of what is happening, it will carry on doing this until comfortable or repetition turns it into a subconscious task. If we were to use driving for the first time as an example the Conscious mind would be used, we would be on high alert as you try and get to grips with all the new tasks ahead of you
The Subconscious Mind. The subconscious mind sees everything in black and white and is not judgemental absorbing like a sponge every experience and memories associated with the experience it has. Once the age of seven is reached the core of our belief system has been formed. Your belief system is based on the subconscious mind which protects you based on the experiences and memories of your past. Not every experience is positive but can still be stored and taken as the truth as the subconscious mind does not judge - it is this experience that needs to be challenged and changed and suggestions made. The client while in an altered relaxed state is open to work on their subconscious mind
The Critical Conscious Faculty – CCF. The critical conscious faculty exists to compare new information against our core belief and acts as a check pulling out the relevant memory or experience to bounce off and protect us from further potential harm whilst in essence it is for our good it is informed by our core belief which sadly sometimes has been shaped wrongly through being treated badly in our informative years.
E.g., being told constantly as a child that you are ugly and that no one would ever want to marry you, and this then being held in your subconscious mind to be the truth growing up.
Hypnosis then is an altered state of consciousness, where the client’s mind is open and responsive to suggestion. Hypnosis concentrates on bypassing the CCF and suggestions are given to the subconscious mind in order to change or adjust the belief system that has been formed from data collected and stored from past experiences.
Hopefully, the questions you have as the client have been answered around hypnosis and what it entails especially the question around the Critical Conscious Faculty
